The Woodlands Varsity Overcomes Episcopal High School, Mistakes For Another Win Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 March 2010 14:10
3/10/10

Perhaps it was playing their first game on the road, perhaps the lighting was different or perhaps the grass was taller, but The Woodlands Varsity committed 26 turnovers (many of them unforced) in their game against EHS. The Woodlands also fared terribly in the face off department by winning only 10 of 26 faces.  So, enough of the bad news. Let's push forward to the good stuff.

The good news is they were talented enough to overcome those  mistakes to win and move their record to 5-0 (3-0 in district).

Sophomore attack Ian Seale had a big night with 6 points on 4 goals and 2 assists. Junior attack Jackson LaPlant had 5 points (3 goals and 2 assists) and freshman attack Connor Pryor chipped in with 5 points on 3 assists and 2 goals.  Special recognition should go to Pryor as he stepped in and filled some big shoes (figuratively, not literally, for those who know Spencer Willey) when sophomore attack Bucky Desedier fell ill and sophomore attack Spencer Willey went down in the first half with a severely sprained ankle. Junior middie Chase Rogers added 3 goals and sophomore middie Connor Milton banged 2 goals in the game.  Senior middie C J Conlon dished an assist, sophomore attack Spencer Willey got on the board before his injury by adding a goal and junior middie Luke Anderson banged a goal to round out the scoring in the game for The Woodlands.

Thursday, 11 March 2010 14:09
3/10/10
The Woodlands JV beat Episcopal High's JV by a score of 8-1 at Episcopal High School to remain unbeaten for the year.

Freshman attack Ben Lipscomb earned high point honors with 5 on 2 goals and 3 assists. Freshman attack Connor Pryor had 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists and Freshman middie Cole Little had 2 gaols for the Woodlands. Sophomore attack James Kelley and sophomore middie Chase Kurtin each had a goal and sophomore middie Mitchell Ruffer dished an assist.

The 1st qtr was not a high scoring affair as the only goal came with 4 seconds left when Little banged one home to give The Woodlands a 1-0 lead.

Ben Lipscomb assisted James Kelley early in the 2nd in a man up situation for a Woodlands lead of 2-0 with 8:59 left. Lipscomb was then on the receiving end of a nice dish from Mitchell Ruffer for a goal with 4:26 left in the half. Connor Pryor got on the scoreboard with an  unassisted goal at the 3 minute mark to extend the lead to 4-0. EHS finally got on the board with just 45 seconds left in the half to make the score 4-1 in favor of The Woodlands at intermission.

THSLL Commissioner's Letter Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 March 2010 14:15

Coaches,

There is  a new NCAA interpretation regarding end caps, and therefore is part
of the THSLL's rules,

All hollow handle sticks must have an end cap.  Simply wrapping tape around the
butt end is not sufficient, although the end cap may be covered with tape.

The prior interpretation had been that the end of the stick (if it has a hollow
shaft) must be covered by something, including tape; this mandates an end cap
of some sort (although players may NOT use a fluted bottle cap like from a soda
or beer bottle).

The player will be told to go get it fixed by the officials, and no penalty
will be assessed unless the player ignores the warning, and then a technical
foul will be accessed.

The NCAA, and therefore the THSLL, expect teams to carry end caps on the
sideline.  They, and we, just want the end covered.  The  player will be told
to correct it..  The intent of this rule and its enforcement is safety.

Additionally, for clarification purposes on the NCAA 2010 Stick Rule, the NCAA
has not said anything about changing the NCAA 2010 Stick Rule, and as such,
neither has the THSLL.

As always, they, and we, expect officials to know the rules and then exercise
common sense and good judgment in the adjudication of any lack of adherence to
the rules.  The THSLL and SWLOA have no plans to change our position on this
rule nor our previously communicated enforcement policy.

Please read the attached letter, and forward it to all your THSLL Member School
Program participants - players, coaches, parents, and fans.  The message is an
important one, and I and your THSLL Board of Directors would like for everyone
involved with the THSLL to receive it as soon as possible.

Thanks you, and have a great 2010 THSLL season!

Ray Martin
THSLL Commissioner

Alumni Spotlight: Tommy Trammel Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 March 2010 14:01
Tommy (’05) has returned from his Church Mission in Northern California and played 4 games at Southern Virginia University last year before a season ending knee injury took him out.  With a successful repair to his ACL and both cartilages, he and the SVU Knights (http://athletics.svu.edu/sports/mlax/index) are off to a good start this season.  The severe east coast winter cancelled their first three games, but in their season opener, the Knights knocked off their SE Conference rival Davidson, on the road!  It was a chilly game (see attached photo).  The next day was a hard fought battle with Coastal Carolina and the Knights came up short 4 – 7.  SVU completed their brand new sports field in the fall 2009 and the Knights hosted their first ever tournament on the new turf field.  Even though they went 1 and 2 for the weekend, (beating Carnegie Mellon, and losing two close ones to UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State) they were encouraged by the progress the team has made.  Tommy moved from long pole to middie last year before his injury.  This season Tommy has 3 goals and is finding his groove as a team leader.

The Woodlands Varsity beats Cinco Ranch to stay undefeated Print E-mail

3/6/10

VvCincoRanchThe Woodlands Varsity came away with another win Saturday at home to move their record to 4-0 (2-0 in district).  It wasn't very pretty, but it was a 16-6 win. Credit should go to the Cinco Ranch team and Coach.  Their program is a relatively new one that has taken the step up to D1 play this year.

Junior middie Chase Rogers had a fantastic game with 3 goals, won 7 of 8 face offs and was the ground ball king with 8. Junior attack Jackson LaPlant (4 goals and 2 assists) and sophomore attack Bucky Desedier (2 goals and 4 assists) shared the high point man honors with 6 each. Sophomore attack Ian Seale was nipping at their heels with 5 points on 2 goals and 3 assists.  Senior middie C J Conlon dished out 3 assists. Sophomore middie Connor Milton had two assists and  freshman middie Connor Pryor scored 2 goals.  Senior middie Owen Corn, freshman middie Cole Little, junior middie Zack Stewart and junior middie Luke Anderson all had single goals.  Junior middie Erik Gorman and sophomore attack Spencer Willey each had an assist to round out the scoring for The Woodlands. The Woodlands won 18 of 24 face offs and only failed to clear the ball twice the entire game. Yes, I said The Woodlands only failed to clear twice in the entire game.

The 1st quarter started out promising for The Woodlands as Desedier fed LaPlant for the 1st goal of the evening with 11:45 to play. LaPlant then dished an assist to Rogers at the 10:39 mark and The Woodlands was up 2-0. Cinco Ranch, however, came right back with 2 goals of their own. Their first  came with 10:06 left on a man up situation. The 2nd came with 6:57 left to tie the score at 2-2. Ian Seale then assisted Owen Corn for a goal with 6:14 left to make it 3-2.  Cinco Ranch again answered by scoring a goal with 5:18 left and the score was tied again at 3-3. The Woodlands scored the next two goals when Desedier again fed LaPlant for a goal at the 3:32 mark and C J Conlon found Rogers open for a goal with 2:09 left in the 1st to end the scoring and provide The Woodlands with a 5-3 lead.

3/3/10
VvStJohnsThe Woodlands Varsity picked up their 3rd straight W and remained unbeaten with a win over traditionally strong St Johns Wednesday night. This was also The Woodlands first district game and they now sit 1 and 0 in district.

Sophomore attack Ian Seale and junior attack Jackson LaPlant were co leaders with 4 points each. Seale had 3 goals and 1 assist while LaPlant had 2 goals and two assists. Sophomore attack Bucky Desedier had another fine game with 3 goals.  Senior middie C J Conlon had an assist and a goal, Junior middie Chase Rogers scored 2 goals and sophomore attack Spencer Willey had a dish and a goal. Senior Ryan Bell had a goal, junior Alan Good had an assist and freshman middie Connor Pryor scored a goal to finish off the scoring for The Woodlands.

The 1st quarter did not go well for The Woodlands. Only one goal was scored in the 1st and, unfortunately, it was St Johns that scored with 5:28 left to take a 1-0 lead. Credit should go to junior goalie Chris Howell for his stellar performance in the net that kept The Woodlands in the game early as St johns had numerous shots on goal that he saved.

The 2nd and 3rd quarters belonged entirely to The Woodlands. In the 2nd, on a man up situation, middie Chase Rogers started the scoring with an assist from LaPlant at the 9:32 mark. Attack Ian Seale scored off a couple of beautiful dodges at the 8:31 mark to put The Woodlands up for good 2-1.  Middie C J Conlon hit  attack Bucky Desedier after only 10 seconds ran off the clock to put The Woodlands up 3-1. Desedier then scored again with 6:15 left in the 2nd. Ian Seale once again showed some great moves and beautiful dodges and added a goal at the 4:37 mark and The Woodlands now held a 5-1 lead. St Johns added their 2nd goal at the 1:19 mark and The Woodlands answered right back quickly when Desedier scored his 3rd goal of the night (assisted by LaPlant) with 1:06 to play in the 2nd. The Woodlands held a 6-2 lead over St Johns at the half.
